We have developed this client information sheet to offer you a comprehensive overview of how we work, and what you can expect from the service that you will receive.
What’s the difference between a lawyer and solicitor?
There is no difference. Solicitor is simply an older expression for a person who performs legal services. Lawyer is commonly used today as a more general term for a person with legal qualifications.
What is a legal executive?
In this office we have both lawyers and legal executives (sometimes known as para-legals). Like solicitors, legal executives are trained to carry out specific areas of legal work. Although they don’t hold an LLB qualification, experienced legal executives are skilled in one or more aspects of law, and usually hold the NZ Law Society’s Legal Executive Certificate. They attend to a wide range of legal work, and may specialise in one or more of residential and/or commercial conveyancing, estate administration and litigation.
How do I know I need a legal professional?
A wide range of legal issues require the input of a qualified legal professional. If you are dealing with any of the following, then you should definitely talk to us: custody/family matters; relationship agreement; selling or buying a home; setting up a business; employment disputes; setting up a Trust; etc.
How do I become a client of Norris Ward McKinnon?
Your first step to using our services is to contact our reception on 07 834 6000 to book a time with a legal professional. Our receptionists will refer you to a secretary, who will arrange your appointment on the legal professional’s behalf. Please understand that this initial appointment is chargeable, even if you decide not to engage our services.
How much will this initial appointment cost?
Most of our services are charged on what is known as a time and attendance basis. That is, the time expended on all aspects of your legal issue by the person or persons in this office at the amount per hour at which the various legal professionals’ services are charged. The cost of the initial interview will be at the charge out rate of the legal professional you speak to. At this interview the on-going cost of the services to be provided to you will be discussed with you.
What do I need to do before the appointment?
Before your first appointment, you need to read, complete and sign our Client Registration form. The secretary who books your appointment will send one to you. You can bring it in with you on the day. Our policy is to not accept any new clients, or start an initial interview, without first receiving this form. Please also make sure that you bring with you any information and documentation that you might have about your legal matter.
Why do you require a signed Client Registration form?
The client registration form gives us a range of important information that we need in order to work for you in the most effective and professional way. Signing the form also gives us assurance that you have read, understood and accepted the conditions of the way we work and we will provide you with a copy of your signed form for your records.
Where do I park for my initial appointment?
We have client parking beside the WEL House building. The entry to this is through the white barrier arm on London Street. Simply press the entry buzzer, and let our receptionists know who you are here to see and they will let you in.
What happens in that initial appointment?
Your first appointment gives your legal professional the chance to meet you in person, to talk through and understand the details of your legal need, and discuss the best way to get the outcome you are hoping for. They will also discuss the likely timeframe and an indication of the costs involved. When you first arrive, please check in at reception with your completed and signed registration form.
What happens then?
Your legal professional will then keep in touch with you, either directly or through the secretary or other support staff. They will make sure that you fully understand everything that you need to do; from filling in forms, to court appearances, to providing information, etc. Their job is to guide you through the legal system.
How do I pay Norris Ward McKinnon?
We will arrange to bill you every month if you meet our credit criteria for an account. If you don’t qualify for an account, we will require a cash payment at the time of every appointment. We offer a range of payment options, including credit card, eftpos and cheque.
Who do I contact about an enquiry on my account?
If you have an enquiry about anything on your monthly account, then please speak initially with your legal professional or their secretary.
If you have any other questions that have not been answered here, then please contact our reception on 07 834 6000.
